can I use a resister to lower the 12v input for my nodemcu?

Im using a 12v power supply because of my stepper motor and I wanted to power the nodemcu with the same supply. I was told you need a buck converter because 12v is a bit high for the chip. My question is why cant I just use a small resistor to do the same thing?
